Frequently asked questions
What is an international dialing code?
An international dialing code (also called a country code or ITU-T E.164 code) is the numeric prefix that identifies a country when placing international calls. For example, +359 is Bulgaria, +1 is the United States and Canada, and +44 is the United Kingdom.
How do I make an international call?
First dial the international direct dialing (IDD) prefix of the country you are calling from (00 in Europe and most countries, 011 in the US/Canada, or + from a mobile), then the destination country code, then the local number without the leading zero. Example: from Bulgaria to the US — 00 1 555 1234567 (or +1 555 1234567).
Why do some countries share a code?
The +1 country code (the North American Numbering Plan — NANP) is shared by the US, Canada, and most Caribbean nations. They differ by the NANP area code that follows (e.g. 1242 for the Bahamas, 1876 for Jamaica). +7 is shared by Russia and Kazakhstan.
What does the "+" mean before the code?
The "+" symbol is a universal placeholder for the IDD prefix when dialing from a mobile phone. "+359 88..." works from any country because the phone replaces "+" with the local IDD prefix automatically (00, 011, etc.).
Do all territories have their own code?
No. Dependent territories often share the country code of their parent nation. French Guiana uses +594, while Guadeloupe uses +590. This list includes both sovereign nations and major dependent territories with their own ITU code.
Where does the data come from?
Codes follow the ITU-T E.164 recommendation (current 2025) — the official international standard for telephone numbering. No external services are queried — everything runs in your browser.
