Easter Pogacha (Ritual Bread)

Ceremonial Bulgarian Easter bread baked with a hidden coin – whoever finds it will have luck for the whole year.

Ingredients

Serves:8
  • 500 g flour
  • 80 g sugar
  • 80 g butter
  • 2 pcs eggs
  • 150 ml warm milk
  • 7 g dry yeast
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 pc coin (wrapped in foil)
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

Steps

  1. 1Activate yeast in warm milk.
  2. 2Knead a soft dough with all ingredients; rise 1 hour.
  3. 3Shape into a round loaf; press the coin inside.
  4. 4Decorate the top with scissors or pastry shapes.
  5. 5Brush with egg wash and sprinkle sesame.
  6. 6Bake at 180°C for 30–35 minutes until golden.
  7. 7Break by hand at the Easter table – the coin brings luck.
