Independence Day

September 22nd is Bulgarian Independence Day, commemorating the proclamation of full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1908 in Tarnovo. The declaration ended the nominal Ottoman suzerainty remaining after 1878 and established Bulgaria as a fully sovereign kingdom. Official ceremonies take place at the Tsarevets fortress in Tarnovo.
