Frequently asked questions

How does the U.S. Navy method work?

It uses body circumferences (neck and waist for men; neck, waist and hip for women) plus height to estimate body-fat percentage. Measure with a tape, relaxed, without pulling tight.

How accurate is it?

Typically within about ±3–4% of costlier methods (DEXA, hydrostatic weighing). It is most useful for tracking change over time with a consistent measuring technique.

What body-fat % is healthy?

As a guide (ACE): men — essential 2–5%, athletes 6–13%, fitness 14–17%, average 18–24%; women — essential 10–13%, athletes 14–20%, fitness 21–24%, average 25–31%.
