Frequently asked questions

How much is the annual vignette for a car?

The annual e-vignette for Category 3 (cars up to 3.5 t) costs 87 BGN (≈ €44.48). There are also weekend (10 BGN), weekly (15 BGN), monthly (30 BGN) and quarterly (54 BGN) options.

Do motorcycles need a vignette?

No. Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette in Bulgaria. Vehicles over 3.5 t do not use a vignette — they pay a distance-based toll instead.

How is the road tax calculated?

For passenger cars the ZMDT formula (Art. 55) is: power in kW × rate (BGN/kW for the power band) × ecological coefficient. The exact per-kW rate is set by each municipality’s ordinance within the legal ranges.

What determines the eco coefficient?

The emission standard: none/below Euro 3 → 1.10–1.40; Euro 3 → 1.00; Euro 4 → 0.80; Euro 5 → 0.60; Euro 6/EEV → 0.40. Cleaner cars pay less.

Where is the vehicle tax paid?

To the municipality of the owner’s registered address. The amount is set by the municipal ordinance — this calculator gives an estimate using the ZMDT formula.
