Frequently asked questions

How many unit categories are supported?

Seven: length, weight/mass, temperature, volume, area, speed and data (with both decimal and binary prefixes for gigabytes/gibibytes).

How is temperature converted?

Temperature is non-linear — Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin are converted via Celsius as the pivot. The formulas: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32; K = °C + 273.15.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB (megabyte) is decimal — 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. MiB (mebibyte, IEC standard) is binary — 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰). Drive manufacturers advertise in MB while operating systems report MiB — which is why your drive looks smaller than the box says.

Are the conversions accurate?

Yes. They use the official SI and BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) definitions — 1 mile = 1609.344 m, 1 pound = 453.59237 g, 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Results are rounded to 4–6 significant figures depending on scale.

Why is there a separate cooking converter?

It is optimised for kitchen measurements — teaspoons, tablespoons, cups (US 240 ml), fluid ounces — that are not needed here. This converter covers general scientific and engineering units.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server or stored.
