Bulgarian forms include Сашо, Сашко, Алекс and Ачо, with the feminine Александра, Сашка and Алекса.

In Bulgarian usage the name is linked to Saint Alexander Nevsky — the 13th-century prince of Novgorod and Vladimir, canonised for his defence of Orthodoxy. His name is carried by the patriarchal cathedral in Sofia, the Saint Alexander Nevsky memorial church, built in memory of the Russian soldiers who died in the War of Liberation. The Church venerates several other saints of the name, among them martyrs of Christianity's first centuries.
