About the name Michael
Etymology & meaning
Mihail comes from the Hebrew Mikha'el (מִיכָאֵל) — a question meaning "who is like God?". Tradition holds it was the archangel's battle cry against the fallen angels. Through the Greek Μιχαήλ it entered Bulgarian, giving Михаил, Мишо, Мишко and Митко, with the feminine Михаела and Михайлина.
History & patron saint
The patron is Saint Michael the Archangel — leader of the heavenly host and the most venerated of the archangels in Orthodoxy. Iconography shows him with a sword or scales, and folk tradition also casts him as the guide of souls to the next world, which gives Arhangelovden (8 November) a particular weight. In some Bulgarian regions the day doubles as a memorial day for the departed.
Traditions & customs
On Arhangelovden a kurban — usually a cockerel or a sheep — is prepared and shared with neighbours for the health of the living and in memory of the dead. Ritual bread is kneaded in the morning and censed. Celebrants receive guests at a generous table; the day falls after Dimitrovden, already in the winter half of the year, so the dishes are correspondingly hearty.

Mihail is a classic Bulgarian name in continuous use across the centuries, borne by rulers too — Tsar Boris I took the Christian name Michael at his baptism. The feminine Mihaela is among the more recent favourites for newborns. The surnames Mihaylov and Mihov are widespread.
