Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Bulgaria in 2026?

The standard rate is 20% — applied to most goods and services. The reduced rate is 9% — for hotels, restaurants, baby food and diapers, and books. A 0% rate applies to exports outside the EU and to intra-EU B2B supplies (with a valid VIES VAT number for the buyer).

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + rate). At 20%: gross = net × 1.20. Example: €100 × 1.20 = €120. VAT = €20.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + rate). At 20%: net = gross ÷ 1.20. Example: €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100. VAT = €20. A common mistake is "subtract 20% from the gross" — that gives €96, not €100.

Why does the calculator show amounts in euro?

Bulgaria joined the eurozone on 1 January 2026 and the official currency is the euro. The Bulgarian lev (BGN) remains legal tender for cash payments until 30 June 2026 at the locked rate 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN. Prices and invoices are now denominated in EUR; the calculator shows an approximate BGN equivalent for the transition period.

When does a business need to register for VAT?

Mandatory registration when turnover exceeds €51,130 in any rolling 12-month window (ЗДДС threshold). Voluntary registration is available regardless of turnover. This calculator does not run any automatic registration check — it only computes amounts.

How do I compute VAT on a price still quoted in BGN?

First convert from BGN to EUR using the locked rate 1.95583, then compute VAT on the euro amount. The result is identical because the rate is fixed. Example: 100 BGN ÷ 1.95583 = €51.13; 20% VAT = €10.23; gross = €61.35 ≈ 120 BGN.

Are my entered amounts stored anywhere?

No. The entire calculation runs in your browser — nothing is sent to any server and nothing is saved.
