About the name Ekaterina / Catherine
Etymology & meaning
Ekaterina comes from the Greek Αἰκατερίνη, interpreted through καθαρός — "pure". Bulgarian forms include Katerina, Katya, Katrin and Katinka.
History & patron saint
Saint Catherine of Alexandria (4th century) was the learned maiden who out-argued the empire's philosophers and was martyred under Maxentius; the famous Sinai monastery bears her name. Her memory is kept on 24 November.
Traditions & customs
The feast is a late-autumn one — guests around a warm table, wine, and wishes for wit and honour after the saint's image. A Katya and an Ekaterina in one family celebrate together.
Popularity & notable bearers
Ekaterina is a classic across generations; the short Katya marks older cohorts, while the full form again leads among newborns.
