Haralampi comes from the Greek Χαράλαμπος — "shining with joy", from χαρά ("joy") and λάμπω ("to shine"). Bulgarian uses Haralampiy, Haralambi, Haralan and the short Lambi and Lambo.
History & patron saint
The Holy Hieromartyr Charalambos (10 February) was bishop of Magnesia, martyred at a great age under Emperor Septimius Severus. In Bulgarian folk belief he is master of diseases — "Saint Haralampi binds the plague" — and his day, Chuminden, is kept against contagion.
Traditions & customs
On Chuminden honey is blessed in church — which makes the day the beekeepers' feast as well. Ritual bread is spread with the blessed honey and shared for health; celebrants treat guests to honey sweets.
Popularity & notable bearers
Haralampi is an old name, rare among newborns but alive in the surnames Haralampiev and Lambev; the honey custom keeps the feast familiar far beyond the name's bearers.
