About the name Iliyan
Etymology & meaning
Iliyan is the Bulgarian extended form of Iliya — from the Hebrew Eliyahu (אֵלִיָּהוּ), "my God is Yahweh". The feminine Iliyana is the most widespread derivative, and the name shares its root with Ilina and Iliana.
History & patron saint
The patron is the Holy Prophet Elijah — the Old Testament prophet taken to heaven in a fiery chariot. Ilinden (20 July) is among Bulgaria's most cherished summer feasts; folk tradition hears the prophet's chariot in summer thunder.
Traditions & customs
On Ilinden a kurban — usually a rooster or a ram — is prepared and shared for health. Celebrants named Iliyan and Iliyana welcome guests at an open-air table; in mountain villages the day gathers whole clans at fairs.
Popularity & notable bearers
Iliyan and Iliyana have held a steady place in Bulgarian registers since the second half of the 20th century — softer, modern continuations of the classic Iliya, one of the oldest names in the Bulgarian calendar.
