Etymology & meaning
Metodi derives from the Greek Μεθόδιος (Methodios), linked to μέθοδος — "method", "path of inquiry", literally "following a way". The meaning suits a man remembered for building an entire literary system. Bulgarian forms are Методи, Методий and Мето, with the feminine Методия.
History & patron saint
The patron is Saint Methodius — the elder of the two brothers from Thessaloniki, archbishop of Moravia and Pannonia. After Cyril's death he carried on their work alone, completed the translation of the liturgical books and defended the Slavs' right to worship in their own tongue before the papal curia — a struggle that brought him imprisonment and persecution. The brothers are venerated together as Equal-to-the-Apostles and co-patrons of Europe — a title conferred on them by Pope John Paul II in 1980.
Traditions & customs
As with Kiril, the day has a double character — church commemoration on 11 May and the national holiday on 24 May. Celebrants mark it alongside bearers of the name Kiril, and the good wishes often extend to teachers and scholars. It is one of the few days on which a personal feast coincides with a nationwide celebration.

Metodi is rarer than Kiril as a given name but carries the same cultural prestige. The two are almost always named together — on schools, community centres, streets and squares across Bulgaria, which makes them among the most visible names in the public realm.

As with Kiril, a book is the most fitting gift. An icon of the holy brothers, a calendar or poster of the Cyrillic alphabet, and anything connected with reading and writing all suit. As 24 May is also a school holiday, children are given books and stationery.
