The patron is Saint Paul the Apostle — called, with Peter, a chief apostle. Initially a persecutor of Christians, he underwent his conversion on the road to Damascus and became the most tireless propagator of the new faith around the Mediterranean. His epistles make up a substantial part of the New Testament. He is celebrated with the apostle Peter on Petrovden (29 June). Iconography almost always shows the two side by side — Peter with the keys, Paul with a book or a sword.

As the day is shared with Petrovden, it is one of the most populous feasts of the summer half-year. A cockerel or chicken kurban is prepared, and the table already carries the first fruit of the new harvest.
