On 11 March the church honours Saint Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem — the theologian who surrendered the holy city to Caliph Umar under a treaty that protected its Christians. For Bulgarians the day carries above all Saint Sofroniy of Vratsa — the Revival bishop, disciple of Paisius, whose "Life and Sufferings" is the first modern Bulgarian autobiography.
