About the name Zapryan
Etymology & meaning
Zapryan is a Bulgarian protective name from the verb "zapiram" — "to stop": given in families that had lost children, "so the evil stop" and the child remain. The feminine is Zapryana; Zaprin and Zaprina run parallel.
History & patron saint
As a protective name Zapryan has no saint of his own — the folk calendar attached it to Stefanovden (27 December), with the Stefan circle, at the very close of the Christmas feasts. The name is especially characteristic of Thrace and the Plovdiv region.
Traditions & customs
The name day shares the Stefanovden table — the year's last great spread. In Thracian villages the name is kept with special reverence for its meaning: "the evil stopped, the child remained".
Popularity & notable bearers
Zapryan is a regional name, rare today — a living remnant of Thrace's old protective naming magic; the surname Zapryanov keeps it densest around Plovdiv.
