Frequently asked questions
What is the range of Roman numerals?
Standard Roman numerals with subtractive notation cover 1–3999. Larger values use an overline (vinculum, ×1000), which this converter does not implement.
What are the seven Roman symbols?
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. Every number is built by combining these seven letters.
How does subtractive notation work?
When a smaller value precedes a larger one it is subtracted: IV = 4 (5−1), IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900. That is why you write IV, not IIII.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Roman numeral system has no symbol for zero — it starts at I (1).
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.
