About the name Ivet / Yvette
Etymology & meaning
Ivet comes from the French Yvette — a feminine diminutive of Yves, which traces to the Old Germanic iv ("yew"). In Bulgaria the name is also folded into the Iva and Ivan circle, and the fuller Iveta lives alongside it.
History & patron saint
Bulgarian calendar practice assigns Ivet and Iveta to Ivanovden (7 January) — the memory of Saint John the Baptist, home of the whole branched John family of names.
Traditions & customs
The name day follows the common Ivanovden pattern — sprinkling for health, uninvited guests, a winter table. For newer names like Ivet the feast is often also an occasion for a modern celebration with friends.
Popularity & notable bearers
Ivet has grown popular in Bulgaria since the 1980s; its best-known bearer is the sprinter Ivet Lalova, one of the fastest women in European sprint history.
