About the name Yoana / Joanna
Etymology & meaning
Yoana is the feminine of Yoan — from the Hebrew Yohanan, "God is gracious". Through the Greek Ἰωάννα the name reached the whole Christian world: Yoana, Joanna, Jeanne and Juana are the same word.
History & patron saint
Yoana celebrates on Ivanovden (7 January) — the memory of Saint John the Baptist. A second feast joins her with Yana on Enyovden (24 June), the Nativity of Saint John the Forerunner and the most herb-laden day of the folk calendar. The Gospel also knows Saint Joanna the Myrrhbearer, a disciple of Christ.
Traditions & customs
The winter feast carries the sprinkling for health; the summer memory on Enyovden brings the gathering of 77 herbs and the Midsummer wreaths passed through for health. Celebrants usually adopt one of the two days as "theirs".
Popularity & notable bearers
Yoana is among the most popular names for newborn girls in 21st-century Bulgaria — a biblical classic with a modern ring, supported by the circle of Yoanna, Yovana and Zhana.
