About the name Sofia / Sophia
Etymology & meaning
Sofia is the Greek σοφία — "wisdom". Bulgaria's capital carries the name too — after the Saint Sofia basilica — a name-and-city bond unique in Europe.
History & patron saint
Saint Sophia was the mother of the martyrs Faith, Hope and Love, who died in Rome in the 2nd century; the four are commemorated on 17 September — the day all four names celebrate. It is also the feast day of the city of Sofia.
Traditions & customs
The feast has two layers — the family one (guests and flowers for celebrants) and the civic one: in the capital, 17 September is an official holiday with concerts and ceremonies. Wishes are for wisdom and good judgement.
Popularity & notable bearers
Sofia sits firmly in the newborn girls' top ten — international, sonorous, and doubly anchored in the calendar and the capital.
