About the name Vyara / Vera
Etymology & meaning
Vyara is the Bulgarian word for faith used as a given name — a calque of the Greek Pistis. The parallel Vera is common Slavic; the two celebrate together.
History & patron saint
Saint Faith is the eldest of Saint Sophia's three daughters — Faith, Hope and Love — martyred in Rome in the 2nd century. The four names celebrate together on 17 September, with a second commemoration on 30 September.
Traditions & customs
The day is shared by the whole "family of virtues" — Vyara, Nadezhda, Lyubov and Sofia congratulate one another. The table is an early-autumn one, with grapes and wine.
Popularity & notable bearers
Vyara is short, transparent and increasingly chosen for newborns; Vera marks the older generations.
